Thomas Cromwell

While studying at university, I was given the chance to create a costume inspired by characters from the classic play/movie 'A Man for all Seasons' which depicts events leading up to the divorce of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, and all the political players that had a hand in this crucial moment in history. I was able to do extensive research into the historical techniques of ‘slashing’, cutting and hemming slits in the fabric to show a contrasting fabric beneath, and the detailed construction required to create a 16th Century doublet and breeches. I also looked into colour theory, deciding that as Cromwell is considered a dark character in this plot, I would use darker colours to allow the viewer to immediately be aware that he is the antagonist of the story.
