A Cloak of Storms and Stars: My Take on Cabal’s Ruin
This particular piece is a cloak called Cabal’s Ruin from Campaign 1 of Critical Role worn by the Character Percy DeRolo, and was a commission for a returning customer—this is actually the second item I’ve created for Charlie. It was so exciting to revisit his vision for the character and bring this iconic cloak to life.
When I designed this cloak, I wanted to layer textures and details that would make it feel unique and full of personality while considering that the cloak itself is supposed to carry lightning magic which can be harnessed against enemie. The lining is one of my favorite parts, and took a lot of fabric research and sampling to find a combination I was happy with. It starts with an iridescent, two-tone blue and purple fabric that shifts and shimmers as it moves. On top of that, I added a layer of navy tulle embroidered with constellations to give the feeling of looking up at the night sky.
For the outer layer, I went with a soft faux suede in a deep, stormy shade. It’s inspired by the look of dark clouds just before a thunderstorm—moody, dramatic, and full of energy. To bring in a little spark, I finished the edges with a gold braid trim, which catches the light and adds a hint of lightning-like brightness to the overall look. The custom leather straps, handmade by Kerris Spencer, were the perfect finishing touch, combining practicality with a handcrafted element that complements the cloak’s overall feel.
This piece is all about contrasts: the shimmer of the lining against the matte outer fabric, the softness of suede paired with the boldness of gold trim, and the balance between drama and subtlety. It’s a cloak that feels like it carries its own story, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Whether it’s for a costume or just for fun, it’s the perfect way to channel a little stormy, celestial energy.
